Terracotta

It is the reddish brown colour that the ancient Chinese saw fit to bedeck their warriors in to guard the tombs of their emperors. Its name translates from the Italian as ‘baked earth’. And, these days, it can be found in every countryside home and garden where an owner wishes to welcome in the arms of nature.

Terracotta, as a colour, is obviously most closely associated with pottery, sand and warmth. It features strongly in Mediterranean gardens where sunlight is abundant and the heat is radiated and reflected thanks to the dark-ish colour and where contrast to often white buildings is required.

This reddish and brown base means that the colour itself brings about symbolism and imagery of nature, but in a fairly aggressive and powerful sense. It is the colour of someone – and of a home – where there is stability, control and confidence. As such, it is strongly prized by home decorators and gardeners everywhere for its sense of presence and power – it having the ability to liven up even the most humdrum and dreary of settings with just one splash or addition.

In your home, terracotta can bring the outside to the indoors. Continue the theme of your newly refurbished patio or outdoor living space into your conservatory or lounge and show that your home and your garden are considered as one – a truly harmonious living space where you and your family are welcome and where you cherish what you have. A truly versatile and family-oriented colour.
